What is the last thing you think about when flying solo as an adult?
Food right? We expect to get fed on a non-budget flight and unless you have any specific food requirements, we usually don’t give it too much thought after the booking is made. If we manage to leave enough time before boarding then we may grab a snack in the terminal and maybe have thrown in a bag of lollies or trail mix in your carry-on for a midnight snack. Maybe you are far more organized than me but prior to kids this is how I traveled!
Flying with kids looks a little different to the above scenario. Most kids like to snack throughout a flight and sticking to the meal schedule just won’t work for them. Kids won’t eat when their bodies are telling them to sleep and when they wake, they want food right away! Other kids just simply don’t like the food given to them on a flight and lets face it, sometimes I can’t blame them!
So how can we as parents be prepared for the inflight munchies and is it OK to bring your own food on board?
First things first, make sure you have booked a kid’s meal under your child’s flight booking. Not all airlines will automatically select a kid’s meal for a child’s booking. Make sure you log into your booking manager or speak with your travel agent to make sure this has been done. Also, don’t forget to make note of any allergies that your child may have.
Yes you can take food on a flight but be aware that security liquid rules apply unless you have an infant (under 2 years old) traveling with you. Think solid foods when packing. Food regarded as liquid include things like jams, gravy, sauce, yogurt, etc. If you want to pack these then ensure they are under 100mls and in a labelled container. There won’t be a facility to warm food up on the plane so pack food that can be eaten cold. Some foods can be packed frozen to help keep them fresh until your ready to eat them mid-flight. I recommend packing your snacks in disposable snap-lock bags as they are easier to pack and don’t take up as much space in your carry on.
Here is a list of food and snack ideas for kids:
- Fresh fruit and vegetables
- Homemade baked goods – Check out the yummo recipes below!
- Breakfast biscuits and cereals – Milk may not be available on your flight so make sure your cereal can be eaten dry, such as Cheerios™.
- Small amount of dried fruit
- Cheese and crackers
- 2 minutes noodles in a cup (ask for hot water on board)
- Cooked cold pasta, cous cous or fried rice
- Pizza rolls/scrolls, cheese scrolls
- Rice crackers
- Savoury muffins
Of course the list could be a mile long but I hope these few ideas help you to come up with some great snack and meal ideas for your child.

DON’T FORGET – Many countries require food products to be declared or discarded on arrival for quarantine purposes. Follow all signs and do what is required. Keep all food in the one place to make sure you don’t have a pack of sultanas shoved into a random pocket somewhere! Those amazing sniffer dogs will find everything, even if we can’t!

Delicious spiced biscuit with a touch of wholemeal goodness.

- 2 Tbsp melted organic coconut oil
- ¼ cup molasses
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 egg Dash of vanilla essence
- ½ cup wholemeal flour
- 1 cup self raising flour
- 1 tsp baking powder pinch of cinnamon, cloves and ground ginger
- granulated sugar for dipping
Instructions: Preheat your oven to 180oC (fan forced). Line a baking tray with baking paper. Mix the first five ingredients together in a bowl. Then add the flours, baking powder and spices and continue to mix. Roll the dough into bite size balls, dip one side in the granulated sugar and then press with two fingers onto the baking tray. Bake in the oven for 13 mins.
